Name of the Scheme: car washing and servicing centre at Thangkharang village
Amount Sanctioned: Rs. 5.00 lacs
Years of Schemes: SCA(BADP)2016-17.
Thangkharang is a border village of Sohra Block; it is well noted as a good tourist spot with a beautiful park full of greeneries. From this park, one can view the panoramic view of beautiful waterfalls, winding Mawlong/Shella road, and a section of the plain of Bangladesh country. Tourists, both from within and outside the state of Meghalaya, are seen pouring in on daily basis.
Out of this inflow of tourists, members of the Seng Samla Thangkharang saw an opportunity whereby they could serve the need of the vehicles of these tourists who come to visit the park and also that of the local as well by setting up a car washing and servicing centre near the parking lot of the park. Seeing that their aim was a need base, and that the Organisation has got its own plot of land and a perennial water source, an amount of INR 5.00 lakh was proposed by the office of the Border Areas Development, Sohra for the setting up of the same. The project was accordingly and duly approved. Execution of the work was carried out by the beneficiary who duly and satisfactorily completed the work with the amount sanctioned.
The project had given employment to the villagers during construction. Just after completion, the project has been made operational. At least, one person gets employment from this project for rendering service and also for looking after it.
Name of the Scheme: Kisan/farmer rain shelter at Tharia village
Amount Sanctioned: Rs. 7.26666 lacs
Years of Schemes: SCA (BADP) 2016-17
The Border Areas Development Department has been allotting around 10% of its allocation for the selection and implementation of schemes under Security Related Schemes. Kisan/Farmer Rain Shelter at Tharia village is such one under Sohra block.
This rain shelter was constructed with an aim of helping the poor farmers and residents of the village have shelter from rains and scorching heat of the sun. Sanitation block/facility is also incorporated in the scheme so as to help fight against open defecation in and around the project; nearby houses can also use it without having to pay for it. Construction of the same was duly and satisfactorily completed. Since the project has to be constantly taken care, and that electricity is being needed from time to time for pumping of water to the storage tank from the nearby Tharia river, the Border Security Force at BOP Tharia, in mutual understanding with the higher Command at Head Quarter, Shillong, is entrusted with the task of care-taking of the project.
Name of the Scheme: Approach Road from Mawtjuh Towards Nongbah Mawshuit
Amount Sanctioned: Rs.18.844 lacs
Years of Schemes: SCA(BADP) 2015-16 & 2016-17.
Nongbah Mawshuit under Khatarshnong-Laitkroh C&RD Block, Sohra Block, like many other villages under Khatarshnong area is not yet connected by road. Mawtjuh is the last road head of the village, and it takes more than one hour to reach the same from the village. In the absence of road connectivity, the people of this village and that of those around it, are facing real hardship in the transportation of their goods- their horticultural produce, and their daily consuming goods as well. A good deal of their hard earned money has to be spent in the portage of the same, and this directly tells upon their economic constraint. Moreover, with the passage of time, shortage of man-power is on the rise and hence the rate for the portage of goods has to be increased from time to time. The absence of road connectivity is especially felt at the time of conveying the sick and the laboring mothers to the hospitals during which, time factor is a crucial entity.
The Border Areas Development Department, Sohra has taken the humble initiative in the noble approach of providing approach road to the village from the last road head at Mawtjuh. With the limited allocation that the office received, an amount of INR 8.844 lakh was sanctioned during 2015-16, and INR 10.00 lakh during 2016-17. An approach road of a running distance of 800 metres was able to be constructed out of the fund sanctioned in the two phases. Around 3000 metres more are left for the village to be connected by this approach road. This 800 metres approach road has been used by the villagers both in walking and transportation of goods by vehicles. The time taken for walking on foot from the village to the new road head is now reduced from one hour to around 30 minutes. This road also serves the neighbouring villages of Nongbah Mawshuit like Mawtongreng, Longsteng, Dewiong, Pdang, Thangkyrta and Mawbawein. The village council keeps requesting the office for completion of the road for the benefit and welfare of the people of these villages.
Name of the Scheme: Community Hall at Nongthymmai (Mawsmai)
Amount Sanctioned: Rs. 5.00 lacs
Years of Schemes: SCA (BADP) 2016-17
Nongthymmai of Mawsmai Elaka which is about 4 KM South of the Headquarter, is a new notified border village (2015). The population of the village is more than 500 with 71+ households. Mostly the people of the village are daily labourers earning their livelihood from quarries. However, with the ban imposed on quarrying activities, they were forced to look for other earning options for supporting their family.
Since the village did not have any community hall of their own, the Government through the department sanctioned an amount of INR 5.00 (L) for the construction of the same under SCA(BADP) for the year 2016-17. The villagers were employed by the village council in the construction of this hall. Out of joy, there was big celebration during the inauguration of the hall by the local MLA - Dr. Donkupar Roy. Committees, public gatherings, etc take place in this community hall from time to time.
